Where is the Phu Ruea National Park?
Phu Ruea National Park is in Phu Ruea, which is approximately 50 kilometers from Loei city.
If you are staying in Loei and want to get to Phu Ruea, you can get there by bus or hire a taxi.
The Loei to Phitsanulok bus passes through Phu Ruea. This bus leaves Loei at 10.00, 12.00 and 14.30. It departs from the main bus terminal in Loei. Once you arrive in Phu Ruea, you then need to find transport to the park.
Where is the entrance to the National Park in Phu Ruea?
There is a side road off the main highway that leads to the entrance of the National Park. The entry of this side road has a pink arch that has Phu Ruea National Park on it, there is also a large brown sign.
If you come into Phu Ruea from the direction of Loei, the side road will be on your right. You will see the pink arch on the right shortly after passing an overhead sign with the picture of the king.
The main highway through Phu Ruea has a central reservation so if you are driving, you will need to take the next u-turn after the overhead sign.

Eventually, you will come to the entrance of the National Park. It is where you pay the park entrance fee. At the time of writing this post, the fee for foreign visitors was 200 baht.

How can I get to the peak?
The road leading to the peak is steep and narrow. If you have transport, you can drive to one kilometer before the summit. At this point, there is a car park. No vehicles can go beyond this point.
If you chose to walk to the top, you could follow the main road, or you can follow the nature trail off the main road.
Near the car park is the visitor center. If you need to get information, maps, leaflets or souvenirs, then the visitor center is the place for that.
The car park also has a few market stalls selling souvenirs, food, and drinks. There are toilet facilities here, too.
To get to the summit from the car park, you can walk, or there’s a shuttle service.
The shuttle service will drive the last one kilometer and drop you off at the peak. There is a small fee for this service.
If you choose to walk, it’s only one kilometer and the trail is good and not steep. It’s a very pleasant walk with excellent views.
At the peak, there is also a large bell and a sign to tell you that you have reached the top.
You will see many people around this sign taking pictures. You might have to wait if you want to get your photo.
When you reach the peak, there are many great places to take pictures. Be careful; there is no fence along the clifftop.
Can I camp in Phu Ruea National Park?
Yes, you can camp in the park. You need to contact the visitor center near the car park and talk to the park rangers that work there.
They have tents and camping equipment for rent, or you can pay to pitch your tent. At the time of writing this post, the charge for renting a tent was 150 baht, and the cost for bedding was 50 baht.
The camping area has toilet and shower facilities. There is also a little restaurant to get something to eat.
December and January are very cold months. Be sure to take warm clothing with you for the cold nights.
Over the New Year holidays, the park is extremely busy. If you plan to go camping on Phu Ruea, try to avoid the New Year period and go at another time.
How high is Phu Ruea?
Phu Ruea National park is 1365 meters above sea level. The temperatures are cool on the peak throughout the year.
At the peak is a big display board showing the current temperature on the summit. It is in December and January that this board gets a lot of interest, especially when it drops to zero degrees.
How much time do I need to see everything?
Due to the easy access to the peak, you can visit Phu Ruea in half a day or less so is a great way to start your day and have the afternoon to visit other attractions that are close by such as PA Ban Huai Lat temple, Chateau De Loei winery or Huai Krathing.

If you are short on time but want to get the best views of Loei province, then Phu Ruea National Park is an excellent choice for you.
The park allows you to drive to within one kilometer of the peak. From there you can walk the final part, or you can use the shuttle service.
Phu Ruea town is famous for a yearly flower festival. This festival is from the middle of December through to early January. The flowers are beautiful, but they also attract large crowds.
If you want to plan a day trip, then I would suggest visiting Phu Ruea National Park, PA Ban Huai Lat temple, and Huai Krathing reservoir. They are all within 20 kilometers of each other.
